The eye chart print

From £21.50

The family, as an optician would set them. Type the names biggest-first and the chart sets itself while you watch: the first row vast, the last a whisper, acuity marks at the side, the red and green bar beneath. Then the chart, the letters, the colours, the paper.

Made properly

Eye chart prints are everywhere and most are a font stretched down a page. Ours steps the rows down geometrically as a real Snellen chart does, spaces the capitals as the optician has them, shrinks a long name to its row rather than breaking it, and sets the marks, the numbers and the duochrome bar in the range's lettering on its papers and backgrounds.

  • The family, as an optician would set them. Each name is a row. The first is vast, the last a whisper, and the sizes step down exactly as a real chart's do — so six names fill the sheet and twelve do too. Acuity marks at the left, row numbers at the right, and the red-and-green bar every surgery hangs beneath its last row.
  • Names, or anything else. The family biggest-first, the grandchildren in birth order, the dogs at the bottom where they can't read anyway. Or house rules: Kindness, Patience, Tea, Wellies, Muddy dog, Bedtime — in descending order of importance.
  • Three charts, two cases, your colours. Classic with the marks, plain with the rows alone, or boxed inside a ruled frame as it hangs in the surgery. Spaced capitals as the optician has them, or the names as you wrote them. Seven colourways, five kinds of lettering, five papers, the range's painted backgrounds.

Questions

What order should the names go in?
Whatever order you type them: the first is the biggest row. Oldest first is traditional; the dog last is compulsory.
What if a name is long?
Up to sixteen letters a name, and a long one shrinks its row to fit the sheet rather than breaking. Twelve names is the most the chart carries.
Can I change it later?
Yes. Keep the link to your design and open it again — a new baby, a new dog — and order another. Nothing is drawn by hand.
