Gran Canaria memories from the dunes to Roque Nublo
Roque Nublo is a volcanic monolith in the municipality of Tejeda, surrounded by the Nublo Rural Park. Nearby in the island's wider landscape, Ventana del Nublo is a natural rock window shaped by erosion, wind and rain. The monolith and the rock window are distinct formations. Their named shapes and settings give the inland landscape a different character from the dunes and wetland beside Maspalomas.
At Maspalomas, the dunes adjoin the Charca wetland, used by nesting and passing birds. In Las Palmas, the Viera y Clavijo botanical garden stands beside the Guiniguada ravine. Its collections include plants native to the Canary Islands and the wider Macaronesian region. Wetland birds, dunes and botanical planting therefore belong to different settings within Gran Canaria, rather than a single kind of island scenery.
Vegueta is the historic founding district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It contains Santa Ana Cathedral and the Museo Canario. Casa de Colón was formerly the island governor's residence, while the Church of San Agustín was built on the site of an earlier Augustinian convent. These buildings give the city district a history separate from the inland volcanic formations. A Gran Canaria holiday gift can recall Tejeda, Maspalomas or the streets of Vegueta, each with its own named features and connections.
