Rhodes gifts with a medieval-city connection

The medieval city of Rhodes became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The Knights Hospitaller settled on the island in thirteen oh nine and expanded the city's Byzantine walls. Their work continued an existing line of defence rather than creating the walled city without an earlier foundation. The medieval city therefore includes both a Byzantine history and changes made during the knights' rule.

Within the walls, the northern Castello contained the knights' administrative centre, hospital and residences. The southern Burgus was a centre of local life and trade, with synagogues as part of its setting. These districts had different roles within the same walled city. The Hospital of the Knights now houses the Archaeological Museum, linking a medieval building with its later use for displaying the island's past. The Palace of the Grand Master was reconstructed during Italian rule, adding another period to the history of the buildings seen today.

Lindos offers a separate Rhodes setting. Its acropolis contains the Temple of Athena Lindia, with captains' mansions and Byzantine churches below. The temple above the settlement and the buildings beneath it belong to a different scene from the Castello and Burgus in Rhodes town. A keepsake about the island can recall either of these named places, without treating the medieval city and Lindos as the same destination.
