A Lincoln gift with a route through the past

Roman Lincoln was known as Lindum Colonia. The Roman fortress stood on the hill, with gateways into the settlement, and the city later expanded down the hillside. Steep Hill was used during that expansion. Remains of the Roman Upper South Gate can be seen there, keeping a particular part of the Roman town connected with the street that now runs down the slope. The hillside is therefore part of the city's history as well as its present shape.

Bailgate roughly follows an old Roman road. Newport Arch was the north gateway into the Roman settlement, while the outline of the forum is marked with setts along Bailgate. Gateway, road line and marked forum give different kinds of trace: a surviving structure, a street following an earlier course, and paving that identifies the position of a former public space.

On Steep Hill, Norman House dates to the twelfth century and has double-arched windows. Harding House belongs to the fifteenth century. Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle stand at the top of the hill, placing later historic buildings above the route down towards the expanded Roman city. These named features connect a Lincoln keepsake with particular streets and buildings, from the Roman gateway to the medieval houses, rather than reducing the city's past to a single landmark.

Gift ideas: compare the Lincoln designs in the grid and choose an image before selecting a format. If the gift is tied to a particular address or meeting place, try the Where It Happened map print. It lets you centre the design on a location from the recipient's own story. Also explore Lincoln - Come On Then, Lincoln - Still Here, Lincolnshire.
