Remembering a stay beside Lake Como
Villa Monastero stands in Varenna on Lake Como's eastern shore. Its history runs from convent to patrician residence, and the villa now also houses a museum. Alongside it, the terraced botanical garden brings together exotic plants, statues, small temples and balustrades. The garden and the building belong to the same lakeside setting, but they offer different parts of the Villa Monastero story: planted terraces outside and the rooms of a former residence within.
Villa del Balbianello occupies a promontory on the Lenno shore. Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini built it on the site of a Franciscan monastery. A later owner, the explorer Guido Monzino, restored the villa and filled it with objects from his travels. Its connection with exploration therefore sits inside a building that already had a religious and residential history. The loggia and terrace face towards Bellagio and Isola Comacina, tying the villa's position to other named places on the lake.
Balbianello's gardens and buildings also appeared in Casino Royale and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Across the lake, Varenna's Monastero offers a different combination of gardens, museum and former convent. These are separate Lake Como locations with separate histories, even when both belong to the same holiday. A keepsake for someone who remembers the lake's villas can draw on those particular shorelines and buildings.
