A gift for someone emigrating: a piece of home to pack

Someone moving to Australia, Canada or anywhere else a long way off has to fit their life into a few suitcases and a shipping allowance. So the leaving present needs to be light and flat, and ideally about the place they're leaving. A print rolls into a tube and a T-shirt folds into the corner of a case. These are the things we make that fit that brief, with what to think about for each.
The street they grew up on
The map print draws one place from real map data: the house they grew up in, the flat they're leaving, the pub where the leaving do is. Search a postcode, address or landmark, check the pin, and choose how close in to go, from a single street to a whole stretch of coast. Then add a title, a second line, the date and the coordinates. A one-word title such as "Home", with the coordinates under it, says plenty. Your searches go through our own service and the exact spot is kept only inside your saved design.
Their town, on something to wear
Most of our shop is places, and 671 of them, at home and abroad, have a Love From design: the place name set as a sign-off, like the end of a postcard. The design pages put it well: "Love from" is the short way of saying you have not forgotten it. It comes on T-shirts, hoodies, mugs, tote bags and prints. Look up their town on find your place; to see what they look like, try Love from Fife, Love from Lancashire or Love from Isle of Wight. Each place also has a local crossword and word search, with clues only someone from there would get.
Messages from everyone, before they fly
A card signed at the leaving do is easy to lose in a move. The everyone signs print collects the messages online instead. Start a board with their name, send the link round by WhatsApp or email, and each person adds their name and a message of up to 200 letters on their phone, with no account to set up. Up to sixty messages set themselves beneath the name in handwriting-style lettering, and you choose which go on. The board stays open for 30 days, so starting it two or three weeks before the leaving date gives people time. Family who already live abroad can sign from wherever they are.
From here to there
The travel map print puts two to twelve places on one map, in order, joined by arcs, straight lines or dashes. Two stops, the old home and the new city, is the simplest version: Manchester to Melbourne, Swansea to Calgary. It covers anywhere between 80° north and 80° south, so wherever they're going will be on it. Keep the link and the design can be opened again later to add the next move.
Getting it to them
If they're still packing, an unframed print ships rolled in a tube, which is easier to fit in a case than a frame. If they've already gone, it can be sent to their new address abroad; customs paperwork may show the value. Framed prints are glazed with plexiglass rather than glass and arrive ready to hang. Either way, check the delivery estimate on the product page against the date they leave.
Going for a long trip rather than for good? Our page on gifts for someone who loves travelling covers the travel map for that.
