Sussex memories in chalk and downland

Seven Sisters Country Park lies beside the Cuckmere Valley in East Sussex. Chalk downland, floodplain meadow and wetlands meet within the park, which is crossed by the South Downs Way. The valley setting brings those habitats into the same area as the walking route. Its position is part of what makes the Cuckmere landscape distinct from other stretches of the Sussex coast.

The Seven Sisters chalk cliffs preserve the shapes of dry valleys. The sea continues to erode the cliff face, so the coastline's appearance is connected with both the earlier valleys and the present action of the water. Birling Gap lies west of Beachy Head, adding another named reference point along this part of the coast. The cliffs and the country park belong to the same wider Sussex landscape, but the floodplain and the cliff edge are different settings within it.

North of Brighton, Devil's Dyke is a dry valley with the ramparts of an Iron Age hillfort. Remains of a Victorian funfair are also found there, bringing a later recreational history into the same place. Nearby Saddlescombe Farm has a historic donkey wheel. The dyke, hillfort, funfair remains and farm give this part of Sussex a different set of features from the Cuckmere coast. A gift for someone who knows the Downs can connect with these particular places as well as the county name.
