A Ben Nevis gift tied to the walk
Ben Nevis stands near Fort William in the north-west Highlands. The mountain was once an active volcano, with light-coloured granite at the summit providing evidence of that volcanic past. Its present landscape includes the Mountain Track, which passes Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe before zigzagging towards the summit. The lochan and the summit rocks give named and visible points of reference within the mountain's geography.
The summit also holds the remains of an observatory. It opened in 1883 to make weather observations and was abandoned in 1904. Its ruin connects the summit with the history of studying the weather, alongside the mountain's geological story. VisitScotland describes the Carn Mor Dearg arête facing the North Face, another distinct part of the setting rather than another name for the Mountain Track.
On the northern side, cliffs rise above the Allt a Mhuilinn. The stream's name means the mill stream, and Forestry and Land Scotland records that it once powered a mill. It now supplies hydroelectric power to Fort William's aluminium smelter. The connection runs from the stream below the northern slopes to industry in the nearby town. Volcanic rock, the weather observatory and the use of the mill stream give a Ben Nevis keepsake several particular links with the mountain and its surroundings.
